The Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award acknowledges remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forests. This award was created by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) in 2012 to honor the legacy of Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai.

Some of the accomplishments sought for the 2024 Forest Champion include a history of contributions:

  • Decreasing forest depletion
  • Expanding forest coverage
  • Boosting the utilization of sustainably sourced wood and non-wood items
  • Playing a part in fortifying forest communities
  • Enhancing livelihoods and involving young people.

Funding

  • The recipient(s) will be granted a cash award of USD 20,000.
  • The recipient(s) will also be given financial assistance for travel to take part in a distinguished international forest function. This will allow the awardee(s) to showcase their concepts and efforts to a wider audience, garner exposure, and expand their professional connections.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nomination of applicants by a third party is required.
  • Nominees may include individual persons, whether living or recently deceased.
  • Professional and research contributions will be evaluated only if they are undertaken outside of work-related duties.
  • Applications submitted by a nominee’s family member or business partner will not be considered for evaluation. 

Selection criteria

The expert jury will evaluate the nominated candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Impact within communities by reducing forest loss, increasing forest area, utilizing sustainably grown wood and non-wood forest products, and addressing human-wildlife conflicts related to forests.
  • The innovative nature of the work, including the level of innovation in technical, social, or financial aspects, as well as the practical application and feasibility of these innovative elements.
  • Empowerment of others, with consideration for social, gender, and youth factors, through strengthened networks, social commitment, outreach, and improved recognition of the value of forests.
  • Transferability and scalability, encompassing local, national, regional, or global contexts, as well as potential application in other countries or regions, including South-South cooperation and the scale of work/activities.
