Please note that while the LExS provides substantial support to recipients, it is not a full scholarship program, as Non-EEA LExS recipients are required to submit proof of sufficient funds for their student visa/residence permit application.

Benefits of Leiden University Masters Scholarship

Financial Empowerment: The LExS offers significant support. There are three tiers of awards under this program:

  • A €10,000 contribution towards the tuition fee.
  • Up to €15,000 for an enhanced scholarship level for academic excellence.
  • Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee: The pinnacle of support, that ensures that financial constraints do not hinder academic pursuits.

Eligibility Requirements

The eligibility criteria for the LExS include:

  • Applicants for All Master’s Programmes: Open to all master’s programmes at Leiden University, except for specific exclusions mentioned below.
  • Nationality Requirements: Non-EEA/non-EFTA passport holders, with exceptions for certain programs listed.
  • Academic Excellence: Demonstrated outstanding academic results in previous study programmes relevant to the chosen Master’s programme.
  • Exclusions include specific study programmes starting in February at select faculties.

Application Process

Note: Begin the application well in advance of the LExS deadline, as it may take up to 2 days to complete.

  • After submitting the admission application, navigate to the Scholarships section on the online platform.

Note: Ensure eligibility for LExS by checking its visibility in the scholarships section.

  • Indicate the intention to apply for LExS and upload a compelling motivation letter in PDF format (max. 500 words).
  • Submit the scholarship application before the LExS deadline, with caution, as no changes can be made post-submission.
  • For those applying to multiple programmes, a separate LExS application and motivation letter are required for each.

Selection Process

  • Faculty Committees: Within six weeks of the LExS deadline, faculty selection committees nominate LExS recipients.
  • Notification Periods:
  • End of November: For programmes commencing in February.
  • End of April: For study programmes starting in September.

Application Deadline

  • The application deadline for programme commencing on the 1st of September is 1st February
  • For programs commencing on the 1st of February, the deadline is the 1st of October.
