The L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO are initiating the 15th edition of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talents -Sub-Saharan Africa program, aimed at providing assistance to young female scientists.

L’oréal-Unesco Sub-Saharan Africa Young Talents Programme

The goal of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science sub-Saharan Africa regional program is to advocate for and inspire the involvement of young African women in the field of science. This initiative seeks out and acknowledges promising young investigators in the physical sciences, life and environmental sciences, material sciences, engineering sciences, and technological sciences.

Benefits

  • This year, the Sub-Saharan Africa program will award a total of 30 prizes, with 25 grants designated for doctoral students and 5 for post-doctoral students from the 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The funding per grant is 10,000€ for doctoral students and 15,000€ for post-doctoral students.

Eligibility Requirement

  • Must be a doctoral student or have earned a Ph.D. in Life and Environmental Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer, and Information Sciences (at least in the second year).
  • Must be a resident of one of the 48 countries in the sub-Saharan African region, and be affiliated with a research laboratory or institution within the region, or be enrolled at a university in one of the 49 countries in the region (including South Africa).

OR

  • Applicants must be from one of the 49 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and have a connection to a research laboratory or institution in one of the 48 countries within the region, or be currently studying at a university in one of the 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Consequently, individuals conducting their research in South Africa are not qualified for this program.

Collaborative Actions of Young Talents

The researchers commit to:

  • Proceed with the research project for which the Young Talent Sub-Saharan African L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award was received.
  • Carry out the expenses as outlined in the proposed budget included in the application.
  • Prepare a report on the research work that was the focus of the award, to be submitted to the L’Oréal Foundation the year after receiving the Prize.
  • Participate in the “Management and Leadership” training and the awards event scheduled to be held in an African capital, possibly in November 2024.

  • Research project demonstrating scientific excellence.
  • Application quality.
  • Ability to Communicate and promote science.
