The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program offers 20 talented journalists from Germany, the United States, and Canada the chance to develop both professionally and personally in their partner countries.
The German-American Fellowship
Fellows spend two months working within their preferred host media organization, where they gain insights into news practices in a foreign environment and act as foreign correspondents for their home media.
This fellowship enables journalists to engage in thorough reporting and acquire firsthand experience of the politics, business, and culture of the host country, while seamlessly becoming part of the everyday operations of the host newsroom.
Program Details
The program was established in 1988 to enhance the knowledge of U.S. affairs among German journalists and bolster the transatlantic relationship. By 1990, the program had developed into a genuine exchange between the two nations. In 2013, the program was extended to encompass Canadian journalists.
Its objective is to provide assistance to skilled journalists and enhance the reporting of transatlantic matters.
Funding
- German recipients of the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship are granted a budget of 4,000 Euro along with a 1,500 Euro travel allowance. American and Canadian fellows receive 5,500 US$, which includes coverage for their transatlantic flight and a portion of their travel and basic living expenses. However, no payment is provided for the work carried out in the host organization.
Eligibility criteria
- This opportunity is available to journalists from Germany, the United States, and Canada who are aged 21-40 and employed by a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station, or news agency, or work as freelancers and/or online journalists.
- Applicants should have shown journalistic ability and a keen interest in North American-European affairs.
- Candidates should possess at least two years of full-time professional journalism experience.
- While proficiency in the German language is not mandatory, it is recommended.
