The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program offers 20 promising journalists from Germany, the United States, and Canada a unique opportunity to gain professional and personal experience in each other’s countries.

During the two-month fellowship, participants work in a host media organization of their choice, delving into the operations of news in a foreign setting and acting as foreign correspondents for their respective home media outlets.

This immersive experience enables journalists to conduct in-depth reporting, acquire firsthand knowledge of politics, business, and culture in the host country, and seamlessly integrate into the day-to-day workings of the host newsroom.

Established in 1988 to enhance understanding among German journalists of US affairs and strengthen the transatlantic relationship, the program evolved into a true exchange between the two countries in 1990. In 2013, the initiative expanded to include Canadian journalists.

The overarching goal is to support talented journalists and enhance news coverage of transatlantic issues.

Key Features of the Fellowship:

  • Duration: Two months in a host media organization
  • Focus: In-depth reporting on politics, business, and culture in the host country
  • Origin: Established in 1988 to enhance understanding among German journalists of US affairs, evolved into a true exchange in 1990, and expanded to include Canadian journalists in 2013
  • Objective: Strengthen transatlantic relationships and improve news coverage of transatlantic issues

Benefits

  • German participants receive a budget of 4,000 euros and a 1,500-euro travel allowance.
  • American and Canadian fellows receive US$5,500, covering transatlantic flights and a portion of travel and basic living expenses.
  • No payment for work in the host organization.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to German and U.S./Canadian journalists aged 21-40, employed by a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station, news agency, or working freelance and/or online.
  • Demonstrated journalistic talent and a strong interest in North American-European affairs.
  • Two years of professional, full-time journalism experience.
  • German language proficiency is not required but encouraged.

Program dates

  • Application Deadline:
    • January 31st, 2024, for Germany
    • March 1, 2024, for US and Canadian applicants
  • Orientation Meeting: July 22 – 27, 2024, in Washington, DC
  • Fellowship in Germany: August/September 2024

Application process

  • German participants submit a Curriculum Vitae, passport picture, professional objectives summary in the host country, and a letter of recommendation from their supervising editor to IJP.
