Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the Accelerator program, it is important to carefully review the following criteria to determine if your project aligns with the program’s requirements:

  • The Forest Accelerator is open to forest restoration teams worldwide.
  • Emphasis should be placed on restoring native biodiversity and ecosystems. At least 70% of the project area must be dedicated to native forest restoration, using a minimum of 10 native species and excluding any invasive exotic species. If your project leans more toward agroforestry, please inform us as we may have an upcoming Accelerator program tailored for you.
  • The applying team should have long-term access and rights to reforest at least 1,500 hectares of land. However, areas that were cleared of native forest within the past 10 years should be excluded. While the land parcels do not need to be contiguous, they should be within 80 km of each other. Larger areas available for reforestation will have a competitive advantage.
  • Currently, our Accelerator focuses exclusively on supporting the restoration of moist tropical and subtropical forests or mangrove ecosystems. Nevertheless, efforts are being made to include a broader range of ecosystems in future iterations of the program.
  • The applying team should possess prior experience in native forest restoration, having successfully planned and implemented at least one project of at least 100 hectares. Projects with existing infrastructure, such as a functional nursery, will receive greater consideration.
  • The projected budget for the project should not exceed $4000 USD per hectare at the beginning. This includes all implementation costs, such as infrastructure, land preparation, seedling procurement, planting, maintenance, monitoring, overhead costs, etc.
  • The applying team should prioritize the restoration of forests that will endure for 40 years or more, benefiting both the environment and the surrounding communities.
  • While not a requirement, it is advantageous if the applying team has previous experience with sustainable business models like agroforestry and non-timber forest products.
