The Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition 2024 is now accepting applications. This annual competition is held in honor of Miss Jemila Abubakar, the former program manager of the Asido Foundation, who unfortunately passed away in July 2020 after a brief illness.

Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition 2024

Undergraduates in Nigerian tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, mono-technics, and schools of nursing, are eligible to participate in this competition. Each year, the competition focuses on a different mental health topic, and for the 4th edition, the theme is “Digital Mental Health Tools for Students.”

By participating in this competition, students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of mental health, be inspired to become advocates in this field, and improve their essay-writing skills.

Prizes

The first three entries will receive monetary prizes.

  • 1st place: N200,000
  • 2nd place: N150,000
  • 3rd place: N100,000

A mentorship program will be available for the top 15 entries.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant should be currently enrolled as an undergraduate in any tertiary institution in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, monotechnics, and schools of nursing.
  • The applicant must be able to provide proof of their current student status.
  • The applicant must agree to the Unashamed pledge of the Asido Foundation by signing it.
  • The essay submitted should have a word count between 750 and 1500 words.

Those interested in participating are kindly reminded to carefully adhere to the following instructions:

  • Submissions should be sent in Word document format only to the email address specified on the JAME Official website.
  • Participants are required to attach a scanned copy of their recent passport photograph, proof of studentship, and a certificate confirming their agreement to the Unashamed pledge.
  • The body of the email should include the following details: full name, email address, phone number, name of institution, department and course of study, and current academic level.
