Applications for the APEX Awards for Researchers 2024 are currently ongoing. In partnership with the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society, and with generous backing from the Leverhulme Trust, the APEX award (Academies Partnership in Supporting Excellence in Cross-disciplinary Research) scheme seeks to offer experienced, independent researchers who have proven their competence in their specific domains a thrilling chance to participate in interdisciplinary and exploratory research that can bring about positive societal changes.

APEX Awards For Researchers

The key objectives of this scheme are as follows:

  • Foster collaboration across different disciplines, with a specific focus on the intersection between science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Support exceptional interdisciplinary research endeavors that may not receive funding through traditional funding programs.
  • Assist researchers with outstanding track records in exploring new research directions through collaborations with partners from diverse disciplines.
  • Enable exceptional researchers to concentrate on advancing their innovative research by providing them with seed funding.

Benefits

  • The Royal Society APEX Awards are now accepting applications. Interested individuals are strongly encouraged to apply for this scholarship, which will support their educational pursuits.
  • The program offers awards of up to £100,000 for a duration of 24 months. Additionally, successful applicants will have the chance to apply for up to £10,000 to develop and lead public engagement initiatives related to their APEX Award.

Eligibility Requirement

Applications must fall within the scope of more than one of the Academies. It is particularly encouraged for applications to cover the areas of both The British Academy and The Royal Academy of Engineering.

  • The British Academy Remit: Proposals from various disciplines within the social sciences and humanities may involve creative and professional practice, which can greatly influence the research methods and outcomes. Regardless of whether the proposal is practice-led or not, it is essential to provide a clear scholarly rationale for the chosen research methods, processes, and outputs.
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering Remit: Applications are open to all fields of engineering. The definition of engineering is broad and encompasses diverse areas such as computer science and materials.
  • The Royal Society Remit: The natural sciences, including agriculture, mathematics, technology, computer science, materials, medical, environmental, and engineering sciences, are eligible for funding. However, clinical medicine is excluded. For a comprehensive list of eligible fields, please refer to our guidance page. If there are any questions regarding the eligibility of a specific project, please reach out to our Grants team for clarification.

You can apply for this scheme if you possess the following requirements:

  • Must be an established independent researcher with a strong track record in their respective field (e.g., engineering, humanities, social sciences, or scientific disciplines).
  • Affiliated with a UK university or not-for-profit research institution for the duration of the project.

In addition

  • Applicants are required to form a collaborative partnership with a research partner (co-applicant) from a different disciplinary background than their own. This partner can be affiliated with the same institution or a different university in the UK. To ensure their eligibility, all applications must receive support from the applicant’s Head of Department, who will need to ensure that the researcher will have access to the institution’s facilities during the award period and can be released partially or completely from teaching duties if necessary.
  • Each applicant is allowed to submit only one application per round.
