Have you heard of the British Council Grants For UK & International Biennales and Festivals? The Architecture, Design, and Fashion team of the British Council has aided UK-based architects and designers in presenting their work on ten international platforms since 2016 through our biennales and festivals grants.

To support biennales and festivals in the UK showcasing the work of international designers, and biennales and festivals outside the UK showcasing the work of UK designers, a grant of up to £5,000 will be given.

Grant

  • The British Council’s Architecture Design Fashion team will provide grants to biennale/festival organizers to cover expenses related to the participation of architects or designers. Each grant will be worth up to £5,000, and a total of 8-10 grants are expected to be offered during the Financial Year 2024-25.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Biennales and festivals outside the UK that aim to exhibit the work of UK-based designers, or UK biennales and festivals that aim to showcase the work of international designers, are eligible to apply.
  • The grants are intended to support the implementation of activities such as collaborations, exchanges, exhibitions, and installations, rather than funding research and development. The grant can cover expenses related to travel, production, and other miscellaneous costs associated with showcasing the work.

Priority will be given to:

  • Activities can be conducted in Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipient countries (for biennales and festivals outside the UK) or with designers located in those countries (for UK biennales and festivals). Limited grants are available to support collaboration beyond this group of countries.
  • Projects should involve designers who are in the early stages of their careers, with no more than 10 years of practice.
  • Emphasis is placed on projects that promote collaboration between UK-based and international designers.

How to Apply

Biennale or festival organizers need to provide details about the chosen designers. The funding allocation, and their plans for engaging the audience. The event should occur between September 2024 and August 2025. Interested parties must complete an online application form by 23:59 BST on June 23, 2024. The application should include:

  • Supporting documents about the event, such as reports or presentations,
  • examples of the designer’s previous work,
  • a letter of support from the designer, and a completed diversity monitoring form for UK applicants.
