“The Marvels” is set to begin streaming on Disney Plus on February 7th, following its theatrical release nearly three months ago, which marked the lowest-grossing box-office debut in MCU history. The Nia DaCosta-directed action-adventure film features Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani. The delayed streaming release provides an opportunity for the movie to find a new audience, leveraging the built-in fan base of other titles starring its cast, such as Ms. Marvel, WandaVision, and Captain Marvel.

In its theatrical run, “The Marvels” generated approximately $84.5 million domestically and $121.6 million internationally, resulting in a combined total of $206 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

The Reasons for the Underwhelming Performance at the Box Office

Despite having a post-pandemic box office run that would be considered average for other films, “The Marvels” faced challenges breaking even due to its high production and marketing costs. With a combined budget of $320 million, the film struggled to recoup its expenses. The lackluster performance has been attributed to various factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and general audience fatigue with the MCU universe.

The Captain Marvel Sequel

While the Captain Marvel sequel received a solid audience score of 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and generally positive reviews from critics, the broader issue within the MCU has been pointed out. Some argue that Disney’s production quality has declined, making audiences less enthusiastic about exploring new content for fear that it might also be of lower quality.

If “The Marvels” finds success on streaming, it could benefit the film’s stars and creators. However, in terms of Disney’s financial perspective, the impact on the bottom line may already be significant.
