Applicants for these grants are expected to present the results of their research as an oral or poster paper at a Wilson Ornithological Society annual meeting within the next five years. Additionally, recipients are required to provide a brief write-up and a photograph for the webpage.

The available grants are:

  1. Louis Agassiz Fuertes Grants: Up to two awards of $5,000 each annually.
  2. George A. Hall / Harold F. Mayfield Grant: One award of $2,000 annually.
  3. Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants: Up to four awards of $3,000 each annually, applicable to research in any ornithological area.
  4. Paul A. Stewart Grants: Up to four awards of $2,000 each annually.

Eligibility

Applicants must be members of the Wilson Ornithological Society to be considered for an award. Specific eligibility criteria for each grant category include:

  • Louis Agassiz Fuertes Grants: Open to all ornithologists, with preference given to graduate students and young professionals. All avian research topics are eligible.
  • George A. Hall / Harold F. Mayfield Grant: Limited to independent researchers lacking access to institutional funds and facilities, excluding professionals, including high school students. Any avian research is eligible.
  • Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants: Two awards restricted to research by Masters students.
  • Paul A. Stewart Grants: Preference will be given to proposals focusing on bird movements (e.g., banding, telemetry) or emphasizing economic ornithology.
