To foster transatlantic exchange and collaboration, WARA, in collaboration with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US State Department, is offering Residencies to WARA member institutions. These residencies involve hosting a West African Scholar on the institutions’ campuses.

The duration of each residency will be 4-8 weeks, and it will provide the visiting scholar with valuable opportunities for library research, guest lecturing, and collaborative work with American colleagues.

Financial support

  • WARA covers round-trip travel costs for the scholar.
  • A stipend of $3,500 is provided to cover meals and local transportation.
  • Host institutions are encouraged to offer additional support, such as housing, office space, library privileges, or laboratory facilities.

Eligibility requirements

  • Applications can only be submitted by WARA member institutions.
  • The purpose is to bring a specific scholar to the host institution’s campus.
  • Individual scholar applications will not be considered.

The application process for host institutions

  1. Provide name and contact information for the WARA host institution representative.
  2. Submit a 50-80 word abstract outlining the proposed residency, specifying the purpose (include the host institution contact person).
  3. Prepare a proposal of no more than six (6) double-spaced pages, covering:
    • Profile of the visiting scholar.
    • Proposed residency activities.
    • Contribution to WARA’s goals.
    • Expected impact or outcome of the residency.
    • Support the host institution is prepared to contribute.
  4. Include the curriculum vitae of the visiting scholar.
  5. Attach a letter of interest from the scholar.
  6. Include a letter of support from a relevant administrator (dean, department chair, etc.) at the host institution.
  7. Provide proof of citizenship through a copy of the scholar’s passport (note: only scholars eligible for non-immigrant visas to the U.S. will be considered).
