Applications are open for the West African Research Association (WARA) Pre-doctoral Fellowship 2024! Intending to foster transatlantic exchange and collaboration, WARA, supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US State Department, conducts an annual competition for Pre-doctoral fellowships.

Fully Funded West African Research Association Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

This fellowship, spanning 2 to 3 months of research in West Africa during the current summer, is designed to assist applicants in preparing a doctoral research proposal or conducting research related to the completion of another terminal degree program (e.g., MFA or MPH).

  • Duration: 2 to 3 months during the summer of the current year.
  • Research Focus: Developing a doctoral research proposal or conducting research related to the completion of another terminal degree program (e.g., MFA or MPH).

Financial support

  • Round-trip travel to a West African country (up to $2,500).
  • Stipend of up to $3,500.
  • Assistance from the West African Research Center (WARC) in Dakar, Senegal for academic contacts, affiliations, and lodging recommendations.

Eligibility requirements

  • Open to U.S. citizens currently enrolled in graduate programs at U.S. higher education institutions.
  • Conversant in the African language spoken where research will be conducted.
  • Priority will be given to applicants at the pre-dissertation stage.

Application requirements

  • Abstract (50-80 words).
  • Proposal (6 pages – double-spaced).
  • Resume or CV.
  • Itemized budget (housing, food, travel, equipment, printing/photocopying, and institutional affiliation fees).
  • Graduate and undergraduate transcripts (official transcripts).
  • Bibliography.
  • Three signed letters of reference.
  • Craft a Compelling Proposal
      1. Describe the concept, methodology, and significance of the research project.
      2. Explain how the research contributes to the mission of WARA.
