Applications are now being accepted for the Wilson Center Visiting Arab Journalist Program 2024. The program offers an opportunity for one Arab, Middle Eastern, or North African journalist to spend 3 months in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.

This program, generously supported by Dr. David Ottaway, Middle East Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, enables selected journalists to conduct advanced, policy-oriented research and writing.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars serves as the official memorial to the 28th president of the U.S., fostering a dynamic environment for global scholars and experts.

The selected journalist will contribute to the Center’s mission of providing nonpartisan and relevant research that informs national public policy debates.

Stipend

  • A stipend of $5,000 per month.
  • Wilson Center covers approximately three-quarters of health insurance premiums for the visiting journalist, with the journalist covering the remaining one-quarter.
  • Provided workspace, a Windows-based computer, and, where feasible, a part-time research assistant.
  • You will have access to digital resources, book and journal collections, and other research facilities.

Eligibility

  • Open to Arab men and women from, and working in, the Middle East or North Africa in the Arabic media.
  • Applications are accepted from print, television, radio, or electronic media members.
  • Candidates must be currently working as reporters, columnists, or broadcasters.
  • Applicants should possess at least five years of professional experience and be proficient in both written and spoken English and Arabic.
  • Must be able to hold a valid passport and obtain a J1 visa.

Evaluation criteria

  • The importance and originality of the research project matter.
  • Quality of the proposal in definition, organization, clarity, and scope.
  • Quality of the writing sample.
  • Professional achievements of the applicant.

  • A 1,000-word maximum description of the proposed project.
  • Detailed explanation of the research topic’s relevance to the Middle East and the United States.
  • CV or resume
  • Writing sample
  • Two letters of recommendation (one not from a current colleague).
