Applications are currently being accepted for the IMU Abel Visiting Scholar Program 2024. This program is designed for mathematicians professionally based in developing countries, providing them the opportunity to visit an international research collaborator for one month.

IMU Abel Visiting Scholar Program

The Abel Visiting Scholar Program, fully funded by the Abel Prize in Mathematics and administered by the Commission for Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union, aims to support post-doctoral mathematicians in the early stages of their professional careers.

Benefits of the program

The grant will cover up to 4,400 EUR (5,000 Dollars) for one month and is intended solely for the applicant.

It covers:

  • Travel costs
  • Visa fees
  • Travel insurance charges
  • Basic living costs for the first month (daily allowance based on the living cost of the visiting country/city, including the cost of public transport and other living expenses)
  • Accommodation cost in the host country (hotel is allowed if the host provides a statement that no guesthouse or rented flat is available and max. 4 weeks.)

Eligibility

As an applicant, you must:

  • Hold a PhD in Mathematics at the time of application.
  • Be based in a developing country (as defined by IMU) at the time of application.
  • Hold a position in a university/research institution.
  • Be in the early stages of your professional careers, i.e., not yet of full professorial rank but have a working contract in a university/college, and be under 35 years of age on the day of the application deadline.

Application Requirements

Each completed application must include:

  • CV of applicant and host, including a list of recent publications (max. 3 pages each)
  • Research statement for the visit, explaining the research project and listing the mathematicians with whom the applicant will collaborate
  • An official invitation from the institution of the international research partner
  • Letter of recommendation (if not written by the international research partner, a statement from the host approving the research plan is required)
  • Copy of the PhD certificate
  • Statement about the current employment status/position in the home institution signed and stamped by the employer
  • Budget estimation (use the Tentative Budget Form)
  • Photograph of the applicant for the IMU website
  • In case of a research visit longer than a month, proof of matching funds from the host institution to cover living expenses must be provided.
