UTRIP stands for the “University of Tokyo Research Internship Program.” Launched by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) at the University of Tokyo, one of the world’s premier research-education institutions, this program was initiated in June 2010.

It aims to advance the internationalization of the GSS by welcoming talented young students from around the globe. UTRIP is an immersive summer research program designed for undergraduates with a keen interest in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in the future.

The program is open to students who are currently enrolled in the second year or later at a recognized college or university outside of Japan and who are majoring in natural science or a related field.

Program Highlights

Intensive Research Experience

  • Participants receive intensive instruction and guidance on research from distinguished faculty members in the GSS’s five departments: physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary science, and biological sciences.

Target Audience

  • Open to students currently enrolled in the second year or later at an accredited college or university outside of Japan.
  • Majors should be in a natural science or a related field.

Comprehensive Experience

  • The program includes an excursion outside of Tokyo, providing a broader cultural experience.
  • A short course on the Japanese language and culture is also part of the program.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for UTRIP, you should:

  • Have finished at least one year of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Be currently enrolled in, and after UTRIP, plan to return to, a Bachelor’s degree program (or a comparable year in an integrated bachelor’s-master’s program) at a university outside of Japan. Priority is given to third-year applicants in a four-year program or second-year applicants in a three-year program, though students in other years are also encouraged to apply.
  • Be studying a natural science or a related field.
  • Have long-term career goals in a scientific area.
  • Plan to commit to the entire six-week UTRIP program from June 26 to August 6, 2024, on a full-time basis.
  • Be able to show proof of health insurance coverage effective during the internship program before arriving in Japan.
  • If English is not your first language, provide TOEFL or equivalent English proficiency test scores. Expired test scores are accepted if you can still prove them upon request by the UTRIP office. Students with eight years of continuous English-medium education are exempt from submitting English proficiency test scores.
