The Maynard 200 Fellowship Program 2024 is currently accepting applications, focusing on providing professional development training and year-long mentorship for frontline editors and managers.

Maynard 200 Fellowship Program

The Fellowship is tailored to address critical challenges faced by editors and managers in newsrooms, especially those transitioning to higher leadership roles. In addition, the program offers tactical coursework to enhance fundamental editing and management proficiency.

Led by esteemed journalism executives and relevant experts, the Maynard 200 Fellowship equips participants to lead newsrooms rooted in equity, resilience, and belonging, navigating industry upheavals and technological shifts.

Program highlights

In-Person Training Rounds:

  • Two weeks of intensive training in Fort Worth, Texas, supplemented by additional sessions, office hours, and year-long program support.

Training Week 1: Editing Leadership (March 11-15, 2024)

  • Building trust and effective editing relationships
  • Coaching for story & Editing triage
  • Hands-on Editing & Hands-on Writing workshops
  • Evaluating and coaching successful story pitches
  • Managing major coverage projects
  • Developing and managing breaking news coverage

Training Week 2: Management Leadership (July 15-19, 2024)

  • Building Resilience & Mental Well-Being in Teams

Cost

  • Tuition-free program, thanks to generous funders.
  • For the first training week in March, the Maynard Institute covers hotel lodging expenses. Fellows are responsible for airfare/ground transportation costs.
  • For the second training week in July, both airfare and hotel accommodations are covered.
  • Travel allocations are capped for international fellows, with efforts made to minimize costs.
  • Financial aid is available for those facing financial hardship.

Eligibility

  • Open to all, with a commitment to addressing under-representation in media-related professions.
  • Applicants outside the U.S. must be affiliated with or contributing to a U.S.-based media outlet.

  • Submission requirements: Updated resume, work samples, one reference letter, and a short essay.
  • Essay topics explore professional background, program takeaways, unique life experiences, and perspectives.
