James Dyson is searching for innovative individuals with new concepts from all over the world. If you have created an invention that tackles a problem, they are interested in learning more about it. The James Dyson Award is a worldwide design competition that honors, motivates, and encourages young design engineers.
The competition is available to design engineering students currently or recently enrolled and is organized by the James Dyson Foundation, which is James Dyson’s philanthropic trust. This initiative aligns with the foundation’s goal to inspire young individuals about design engineering.
Award Brief
The requirements are wide-ranging. They seek designers with unique perspectives to develop products that perform more effectively. Engineers use a methodical design approach. The judges, particularly James Dyson, favor designs that use ingenious yet uncomplicated engineering principles and solve specific issues.
In addition to demonstrating the technical feasibility of your project, we are also interested in its commercial potential. Therefore, please include any research you have conducted on manufacturing costs and retail prices. James Dyson will also seek entries that address sustainability concerns or have been sustainably designed, sourced, or manufactured.
Award
The James Dyson Award provides an opportunity for aspiring inventors to gain recognition. In addition to receiving a substantial cash prize, winners may also receive media attention to jumpstart their careers and earn the respect of their colleagues. This could potentially give them the confidence to start their venture. The application process is straightforward.

- International runners up: $8,500

Eligibility Requirement
- The James Dyson Award is available to both current university students and those who have graduated in the fields of engineering, product design, or industrial design within the past four years, and it requires official documentation as proof.
- Participants can still take part in the competition as part of a team if they prefer not to work alone or if they have a fantastic idea to share despite studying other subjects. The team leader must have studied one of the qualifying subjects, and all team members must have been enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for at least one semester in the past four years.
- To be eligible, all participants must have studied in one of the countries or regions specified by the competition below:
- Austria, Belgium, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, , Malaysia, Mexico, China, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

To gain access, you must first sign up and submit evidence that you are currently a student or have recently graduated in one of the relevant fields. After registering, you will be required to fill out an online form where they would like you to provide the following information:
