IWA Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme 2024

The recognition program is built upon the vision of IWA Climate Smart Utilities and is centred around three interconnected pillars:

  • Adaptation: Enhancing resilience to counteract climate change
  • Mitigation: Evaluating and striving to curtail GHG emissions
  • Leadership: Guiding and motivating others to undertake Climate Smart initiatives for a water-wise future.

The current year’s evaluation of utilities will be conducted under two main categories. The first category, referred to as ‘Achiever’, will focus on utilities that have made significant progress in their Climate Smart journey (covering all three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation and Leadership), and will be judged according to a more comprehensive framework. The second category, known as ‘Entrant’, will concentrate on utilities that have prioritised the climate agenda and have initiated their Climate Smart journey (involving at least one of the three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation and Leadership), and will hence be assessed by way of general narratives of their climate actions.

Benefits

  • Six representatives from each of the top three utilities in the Achiever category, as well as the top three utilities from low-, lower-middle-, and upper-middle-income countries in the

Entrant category will be offered an appealing financial incentive package. This package will cover flight expenses, conference registration fees, and accommodation in Toronto.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Water and sanitation utilities worldwide are welcome to submit their applications.
  • Utilities are limited to applying for just one category.
