Call for Applications: Mongabay Africa Scholarships For Environmental Journalism 2024! In today’s world, the urgency for quality environmental journalism cannot be overstated. As our planet faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, the need for informed reporting on environmental issues has never been greater.
However, the field of environmental journalism is confronted with numerous obstacles, including dwindling funding, restrictions on press freedom, and limited opportunities for aspiring journalists, especially in regions most affected by environmental crises. To address these challenges, Mongabay Africa has taken a proactive step by launching its French-speaking scholarship program for environmental journalism across the African continent.
Scholarships For Environmental Journalism
Mongabay Africa’s French-speaking fellowship program for environmental journalism supports up to 12 fellows annually, with each cohort comprising six fellows from diverse countries.
Under the guidance of experienced editors-in-chief, participants will gain invaluable experience within an international news organization, honing their skills in environmental reporting and building a portfolio of original publications to propel their careers forward.
Benefits and Financial Support
Each scholar selected for the program receives a stipend of $500 USD per month for the duration of the three-month program, totalling $1,500 USD. This financial support ensures a conducive environment for creativity and productivity.
Remote Work Opportunities: Mongabay Africa’s scholarship program offers remote work opportunities, eliminating geographical barriers and allowing fellows to collaborate with editors and fellow journalists.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Mongabay Africa scholarship program must meet the criteria below to be considered for selection:
- Applicants must have an aspiration to pursue a career as an environmental journalist
- Have the ability to work remotely with a reliable internet connection and webcam
- Commit to dedicating 10 hours per week to program activities
- Residence in one of the following countries for the respective cohort (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger or Togo)
- Demonstrated interest in nature conservation issues and journalistic writing skills
- There is no level of education required, as the scholarship program is not linked with any university.
- Application documents for the Mongabay Africa scholarship must be submitted in the appropriate language.

Selection Process
The selection of fellows for the Mongabay Africa scholarship program is conducted internally by the Mongabay teams, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis.
Applicants will be notified of the status of their application at least two weeks before the commencement of the cohort.
Timeline
- Application Deadline: March 15, 2024.
- The scholarship program operates twice a year, from April to June and from October to December, targeting six countries on the African continent.
- The application windows for the April-June and October-December cohorts are carefully structured to accommodate the schedules of aspiring journalists.
