Applications are now open for the Injini/Mastercard Foundation Ed Tech Fellowship Program 2024. This unique 6-month program, conducted in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, provides equity-free hybrid venture support.
The fellowship focuses on a partnership approach to business acceleration, unfolding from May through October 2024.
Key objectives of the EdTech Fellowship program
- Facilitate market access with a focus on increasing reach to learners at the “bottom of the pyramid.”
- Design and implement, or refine, impact measurement, monitoring, and evaluation systems.
- Improve financial sustainability, including investment readiness support where appropriate.
Program Benefits
Selected EdTech companies, known as “Fellows,” will receive specialized acceleration support from Injini valued at over R2,500,000, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. Program benefits include:
- Hands-on support from specialists in education innovation, fundraising, impact measurement, and more.
- Pedagogical evaluation and certification by EdTech Impact and Education Alliance Finland.
- Bespoke market research support by Injini’s team of education innovation researchers.
- “Sponsored Skills” to address team needs and strengthen overall capacity for long-term business success.
- Networking opportunities with key ecosystem players and industry experts.
- Access to courses and office hours from Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
- Contribution to a growing body of evidence documenting effective practices in African EdTech.
- Equity-free venture funding of over R1,000,000.
Eligibility criteria
The typical participating EdTech company should:
- Address a significant market opportunity, with a focus on South Africa.
- Have a tech-enabled solution designed to enhance access and improve educational outcomes, preferably in pre-primary education, primary and secondary education, and/or teacher training.
- Be a post-revenue, growth-stage startup (annual revenue likely exceeding R1,000,000) or, if a non-profit entity, grant funding constitutes annual revenue.
- Have the potential to reach 8,000 direct learners within one year of program participation.
- Be led by a diverse team with a strong understanding of the local context, with special support for inspiring female founders and leadership teams.
Application process
Applications are open from January 22, 2024, to midnight on February 13, 2024. The application process involves rounds of submission, virtual interviews, due diligence, and pitches.
Successful candidates will be notified by March 28, 2024, with program onboarding and contracting scheduled for April 1, 2024.
The cohort kick-off event for the final 12 selected South African EdTech companies will be held on April 11, 2024.
