The award will be given for an essay that is based on original, unpublished research conducted while enrolled as a student (either at the undergraduate or postgraduate level) at any tertiary educational institution globally.
Essays can investigate any facet of the history of Australian science, including medicine and technology, or the environmental history of Australia. The definition of ‘Australia’ in this context may also include essays that focus on the broader Australian region, as broadly defined to encompass Oceania.
Award
- The main prize is $3,000, with additional prizes given at the panel’s discretion.
Eligibility Criteria
- The essay should be between 4000 and 8000 words (excluding endnotes). It must be written in English and properly referenced according to the style outlined for the Australian Academy of Science’s journal, Historical Records of Australian Science.
- Essays can delve into any facet of Australian scientific history, encompassing medicine, technology, or environmental history. The definition of ‘Australia’ may also include essays concentrating on the larger Australian region, which encompasses Oceania. Furthermore, essays comparing Australian issues and subjects to those of other locations are encouraged.

Applications need to be sent to [email protected] by 9 am AEDT on Monday, January 15, 2024. The materials should be submitted in the following order:
- Covering email, which should include:
- Full name
- Contact information (mailing address, email address, and phone number)
- Title of submission
- University course (and year of course if undergraduate)
- Student number
- Essay in PDF format
- The panel of judges will comprise three individuals:
- Chair (or nominee), National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science (chair of the panel)
- Editor (or nominee), Historical Records of Australian Science
- Senior Curator (or nominee), National Museum of Australia
