The establishment of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1956 was intended as a lasting tribute to Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian. The Prize is a reflection of its dedication to prioritizing sustainability in all its endeavors. With an annual award of 1 million euros, the Prize funding has been utilized to aid those confronting the most severe consequences of climate change and to promote the expansion of climate solutions. In 2023, the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity was bestowed upon leaders of ecosystem restoration from the Global South.

Prize Funding

  • The annual Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity is valued at 1 million euros. If more than one winner is selected, the award will be divided equally among them.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nomination materials must be submitted in English
  • The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity is open to nominations for individuals, organizations, or groups worldwide who are making a significant contribution to developing solutions to address climate change. Nominations should demonstrate the potential for outstanding results and provide compelling evidence of future impact.
  • Nominations must be submitted by a third party; self-nominations are not allowed.
  • The prize cannot be awarded posthumously or to an organization that has ceased its activities, nor to former members of the Prize Jury.
  • The prize is not meant to be a lifetime achievement award, nor is it intended for start-up funding. It is intended for work with the potential to scale and benefit communities at both local and global levels. The prize money should be used to maximize the impact of the recipient’s work.
  • The same person may nominate more than one candidate (an individual, an organization, and/or a group of individuals and/or organizations as a collective application). Each nomination requires a separate form.

Selection Criteria

The Jury will choose nominations based on the following criteria:

  • Innovation: showing innovative solutions and/or potential for long-term transformative change.
  • Impact: demonstrating widespread benefits for the global environment and society and/or being scalable with the potential for long-term impact.
  • Inspiration: ability to serve as a model, demonstrate active leadership, or inspire others.
  • Relevance of the nomination: timely, considering the contribution it will make to address critical issues and challenges in the future.
