The scholarship, which is named after the former executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, aims to attract talented aspiring journalists who will contribute to diversity in American journalism.
Student journalists, much like their professional counterparts, are committed to reporting on their communities through various channels. Balancing academic work, part-time employment and journalism endeavors can often be without recognition. The National Press Club and NPC Journalism Institute are pleased to award scholarships in recognition of promising future journalists who are making a difference in their communities.
Scholarship
- The Scholarship for Journalism Diversity Honoring Julie Schoo offers a one-year $5,000 scholarship. This scholarship, named after the former executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, aims to attract talented aspiring journalists who will contribute to diversity in American journalism. The scholarship can be renewed for up to three years, providing a total of $20,000 towards educational costs.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be a high school senior currently applying for admission to a recognized college or university in the United States.
- Maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Intend to pursue a career in journalism.
Applicants are not required to be citizens of the United States to qualify for this scholarship.

A complete application consists of:
- A brief elevator pitch: Why are you passionate about journalism, and what steps have you taken to pursue it? (maximum of 150 words).
- Your most recent academic transcript (PDF).
- A 500-word essay detailing how you intend to promote diversity in American journalism (PDF).
- A description of your financial need
- Three to five work sample employers demonstrating your ability or a career interest in journalism.
- Three letters of recommendation from teachers or professors, , leaders of the various groups you are involved with, or other people who are most familiar with your work and work ethic.
Samples of work may consist of published material, scripts for broadcast news stories, podcast clips, video news stories, digital media, or other journalistic pieces. Audio or visual samples should not exceed 4 minutes per clip.
