Each EPSILON will consist of three to six organizations forming a consortium, with one organization as the central hub. These networks will focus on specific thematic areas related to epidemic and pandemic sciences research, preparedness, and response.

The main objective is to cultivate and encourage high-quality research and innovation in epidemic and pandemic sciences in Africa.

By doing so, these networks will build a strong community of experts across various health sectors, including One Health, to tackle existing health challenges and enhance capabilities for future infectious diseases and health threats. Also, they will foster collaborative communities of practice that can be leveraged for long-term collaboration and utilized during future outbreaks to respond to urgent research and policy needs.

Thematic Research Areas

  • Vaccinology and initial stages of vaccine research and development
  • Studying the relationship between genotype and phenotype in virology
  • Conducting clinical research and trials on infections prone to epidemics and pandemics
  • Researching public health policies related to epidemics and pandemics
  • Exploring the connection between climate change, biodiversity, and preventing pandemics
  • Utilizing advanced data analysis and assembly techniques for assessing and mitigating threats
  • Studying the social and behavioural aspects in the context of epidemics and pandemics.
