This award aims to recognize someone with the drive and potential to become a future star in the industry.
BBC News Komla Dumor Award
The recipient of the BBC World News Komla Dumor Award will receive an exclusive training opportunity with the BBC in London, starting in September 2024 and lasting for three months. During this time, they will work with various BBC News teams to produce a story about Africa that will be shared globally.
The winner will also benefit from mentorship from a seasoned BBC professional and attend training courses offered by the esteemed BBC Academy. This award honors the legacy of Komla Dumor, who dedicated his career to sharing authentic African stories with the world.
Benefit
- The BBC will cover the winner’s travel expenses to and from the UK, as well as their visa costs. Additionally, the BBC will organize and cover the winner’s accommodation in London throughout their placement. The winner will be provided with a £7000 allowance for their three-month stay in London, subject to tax and deductions as necessary.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this esteemed award, candidates must currently be residing and working as a journalist in Africa.
- Prospective applicants should possess the following qualifications and background:
- Exceptional journalism abilities, including proficiency in digital and social media.
- Prior experience in broadcasting is preferred.
- A compelling broadcasting persona, articulate voice, and effective presentation skills for both audio and visual platforms.
- Demonstrated skill in generating and presenting a compelling original story idea focused on Africa that aligns with BBC editorial standards.
- Comprehensive and current knowledge of various aspects of the African continent, such as politics, business, culture, history, and sports.
- Proficiency in English as a first language or at an equivalent level.

- Submission of a CV, limited to a maximum of two pages.
- Possession of a valid passport that extends until at least 31st January 2025, or the capability to obtain one by 31st March 2024.
- No current or prior affiliation with the BBC as an employee.
- If selected, your employer must consent to grant you a three-month leave from September 2024 to participate in the London placement.
- A visa necessitating a degree from a recognized university or current enrollment in a program equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree.
- Shortlisted individuals will be required to provide references, evidence of employment, birth certificate, passport, a suitable UK visa, and confirmation of English language proficiency.
