You can submit your application for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship. Under the agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) to promote science in developing nations, over 50 students or scholars from developing countries will be sponsored to study I’m China.

This sponsorship will enable them to pursue their doctoral degrees in China for a period of up to 4 years. This collaborative effort seeks to advance scientific knowledge and expertise in developing regions by providing educational support and opportunities for extended research engagements.

About the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO)

The Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) is a non-profit, non-governmental international organization that was established in 2018. This alliance comprises 37 founding members, consisting of scientific institutions, universities, and international organizations from various parts of the world.

About the ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents

The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents, established in 2019, is aimed at training and nurturing young scientists globally. This scholarship supports 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students annually. The recipients have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate education at esteemed institutions such as the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), or various institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) across China.

In a noteworthy development this year, the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship, a sub-category of the ANSO Scholarship, has been officially introduced. Aligned with the priorities of TWAS/UNESCO, this scholarship gives special consideration, though not exclusively, to two specific target groups: candidates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and women. Each year, TWAS/UNESCO will select up to 50 PhD students from developing countries in the South for this category, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity in scientific education.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Tuition Waiver: Full coverage of tuition fees, ensuring that awardees can pursue their studies without the financial burden of tuition expenses.
  • Monthly Stipend: A monthly stipend of either 6,000 or 7,000 CNY (Chinese Yuan) is provided to each awardee. The specific amount depends on whether the candidate has successfully passed the qualification test organized by the University. This stipend is granted for up to 48 months, supporting the living expenses of the scholars throughout their academic journey.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible:

  • You must  NOT hold Chinese citizenship;
  • You must be a national of eligible developing countries in the South (Developing Countries in the South | TWAS)
  • As an applicant, you should be proficient in English or Chinese;
  • For PhD program applicants: you should be born after 1st January 1989­­ (inclusive);
  • You must meet the admission criteria for international students of USTC/UCAS;
  • You should NOT take up other assignments during the period of his/her scholarship.
  • If the applicant is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at any university/institution in China, s/he will NOT be eligible for the PhD program of this scholarship. Otherwise, s/he will be disqualified from admission and the situation will be reported to the current university/institution

Do not forget that you are NOT allowed to apply for the ANSO Scholarship in both USTC and UCAS simultaneously, if you do so, your application will not be accepted, you will be disqualified from admission.

File and submit your application in the USTC/UCAS admission system as requested before the deadline.

When applying, make sure you first choose “the ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents” in your application, then Check the box as instructed in the application system to apply for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO Scholarship.

Note, choose BOTH Young Talents AND the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO Scholarship when applying.
