Over 120 judges, magistrates, and police officers have received cyber-training from the Zambia Information and Communication Authority (ZICTA) in an attempt to enhance the prosecution of cases involving this crime.
Zambia Reportedly Trains Justice System and Police on How to Detect Cyber Threats
The statement was made during the launch of the Information and Communications Technology Hub for Women and Girls in the Chisamba area of the Central Province by Choolwe Nalubamba, the director general of ZICTA.
According to Nalubamba, 120 judges, magistrates, and police officers received training from the communications regulator on how to identify and look into cyber risks.
“ZICTA also hosted, in the Eastern Province secondary schools, a Girls ICT Indaba that attracted over 300 girls who subsequently received mentorship sessions to stimulate and help them to take up STEM-related programs and courses,” said Nalubamba.
ZICTA constructed an ICT hub for women and girls in Chisamba in partnership with UNDP, using funding from the Irish and Swedish governments.
Zambia/UN Initiative on Gender-Based Violence Online
The center was created as a component of the joint Zambia/UN initiative on gender-based violence online, which also seeks to close the gender digital gap.
Cornelius Mweetwa, acting minister of science and technology, said, “The launch signifies a pivotal step founded on collective efforts towards a safe and more inclusive digital space, thereby playing a critical role in advancing understanding of the challenges faced by women and girls in the online sphere.”
President Haikande Hichilema of Zambia launched the country’s National ICT Policy last year, which includes steps to narrow the gender gap in technology and fight online harassment based on gender.
