The World Trade Organization (WTO) is pleased to announce the commencement of applications for the 2024 WTO Essay Award for Young Economists. The primary objective of this award is to encourage the production of exceptional research in the fields of trade policy and international trade cooperation, thereby strengthening the bond between the WTO and the academic realm.
We are delighted to congratulate Xiao Ma of Peking University HSBC Business School, the recipient of the 2023 WTO Essay Award for Young Economists. Xiao Ma’s paper, titled “College Expansion, Trade, and Innovation: Evidence from China,” secured the top spot as determined by the Selection Panel.
Benefits of the Award
- The annual WTO Essay Award presents a prize of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay. In the case of collaborative efforts, the prize money will be equally distributed among the authors. The winning paper will be officially announced during the annual gathering of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the premier conference specializing in international trade. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place from September 12th to 14th, 2024, at Athens University in Greece. Moreover, the winning author will receive financial support to attend the event.
Eligibility
- Submissions must tackle topics pertinent to trade policy and international trade cooperation.
- The author(s) must hold or be in the process of completing a PhD degree.
- Additionally, if the author(s) are over 30 years old, they must have defended their PhD no more than two years prior. This criterion applies to all authors in the case of collaborative papers.
- Your Essays must not exceed 15,000 words to be considered for the award.
Application Requirements
All essays must be submitted by June 3, 2024. The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat will compile a shortlist of eligible papers by June 17, 2024.
The final decision will be made by the selection panel by July 8, 2024. Only the authors of shortlisted essays will receive notifications.
