The goal of MiniPay is to use decentralized finance (DeFi) to its advantage by offering easily accessible financial instruments and bringing millions of African people online. MiniPay integrates its stablecoin wallet within the Opera Mini browser to provide quick, simple, and cost-effective payments. MiniPay, which uses the Celo network to offer sub-cent fees, is presently available in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. Plans are to expand into South Africa and other countries.

Based on the Celo blockchain, MiniPay is a self-custodial dollar stablecoin wallet that is effortlessly integrated into the Opera Mini browser for Android users. With incredibly cheap transaction costs, MiniPay enables customers to transfer, receive, and save money on their smartphones quickly. Through MiniPay integrated into Opera Mini, Celo, and Mento Labs hope to onboard millions of users to Web3 throughout Africa. This would enable them to give accessible financial solutions.

Opera MiniPay Strategic Partnership with Celo and Meta Labs

The same goal of achieving financial inclusion and economic stability in Africa is the driving force for the strategic relationship between Mento Labs, Celo, and MiniPay. When used with the MiniPay network, Mento decentralized cUSD (Celo Dollar) stablecoins provide several benefits, including reducing currency fluctuation and acting as a trustworthy store of value. This is particularly important in areas where there is economic uncertainty and hyperinflation, as stablecoins offer a decentralized, easily accessible alternative to traditional financial institutions.

“The MiniPay wallet has been designed to be intuitive for users of all experience levels to reap the benefits that decentralized finance can bring. Via a familiar Web2 experience, MiniPay makes it easier and more affordable for individuals across Africa to acquire, send, and receive Mento USD stablecoins simply by using mobile phone numbers,” said Product Director, MiniPay, Charles Hamel.

According to Jason Rodrigues, Head of Founder Programs at the Celo Foundation, “The Celo community is thrilled to support the growth of our shared mission, to create the conditions of prosperity for all, through Opera MiniPay. This partnership allows real-world users access to a variety of inclusive financial tools in a seamless, fast, and reliable way.”
