Since its inception in 1972, the award winners have been recognized for their innovative reporting, which delves into ethical dilemmas and societal implications related to the sciences.

The awards specifically aim to acknowledge science writing that incorporates diverse perspectives, as this fosters the creation of more inclusive and relevant stories that better serve readers and communities. Hence, they consider diversity in subjects, sources, audiences, and authors to be an essential aspect of excellence. Each year, a panel of accomplished peers evaluates the submissions.

Categories

The following are the different categories eligible for submission:

  • Books: Eligible entries include book-length works that have been commercially published, either in print or as an e-book.
  • Commentary: An eligible entry comprises a single article or broadcast that is an opinion piece, editorial, essay, or similar work that conveys a subjective point of view or perspective on a scientific issue of societal importance.
  • Science Reporting: Eligible entries include a single article or broadcast covering recent or breaking news. Written entries must be fewer than 1500 words, or a single broadcast up to four minutes in length. For mixed-media entries, each minute of audio/video is considered equivalent to 350 words. Entrants must specify whether judges should consider text only or multiple media.
  • Science Features: An eligible entry consists of a single article or broadcast that provides an in-depth exploration of a subject. While the focus may be timely, this category is not intended for long-form breaking news. Features should be thoroughly researched and could encompass storytelling, evaluations, and/or graphical representations of data. Text submissions must range from 1500 to 4000 words, or a single broadcast should be between 4 to 12 minutes in duration. Similar to the Science Reporting category, entrants must indicate whether judges should consider text only or multiple media.
  • Longform Narratives: Eligible entries comprise a single article or broadcast that tells a compelling story through extensive research, reporting, and strong narrative storytelling. Submissions in written form must exceed 4000 words, or a single broadcast should last for at least 12 minutes. In case of entries that involve a combination of different media, each minute of audio or video content is deemed equivalent to 350 words. Entrants must indicate whether judges should evaluate solely the text or take into account multiple forms of media.
  • Series: An eligible entry includes a series of articles or broadcasts published or produced as a cohesive, named series in a single publication (or publications collaborating on the series). Entrants can choose to submit a minimum of two articles or broadcasts and a maximum of three to represent the series for consideration in the competition. As with other categories, for mixed-media entries, each minute of audio/video is considered equivalent to 350 words, and entrants must specify whether judges should consider text only or multiple media.

  • NASW will grant individual cash prizes of $2,000 for the outstanding writing in each of the categories.
