Applications are now being accepted for the John Lewis Young Leaders (JLYL) Program 2024-2025, a year-long fellowship designed to prepare college students for future roles in community organizing and civic engagement.

John Lewis Young Leaders (JLYL) Program

This unique program provides participants with resources, support, and a stipend to ensure their success while making a positive impact in their communities.

Program Overview

  • Duration: Year-long fellowship
  • Focus: Community organizing and civic engagement
  • Capstone Project: Fellows engage in human rights work through a robust capstone project

Support and Resources

  • Access to comprehensive grassroots organizing workshops
  • 1:1 mentorship from RFK Human Rights staff
  • Financial support
  • Network access to human rights professionals, peers, and program alumni

Program Requirements

  • You must attend the 3-day JLYL retreat with organizing workshops
  • Monthly 1-on-1 coaching with RFK Human Rights staff
  • Attend monthly cohort meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month
  • Complete a capstone presentation after the fellowship

Benefits of the Program 

  • $2,000 professional stipend (paid in two $1,000 installments over fall and spring semesters)
  • Agency to focus on elevating social issues of personal interest
  • $1,000 funding for events and activities related to the capstone project
  • Access to resources from expert community organizers and activists
  • Paid-for retreat in summer 2024 (location TBD)

Eligibility

  • The program is for undergraduate students.
  • You must be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year accredited program at a U.S. university

Preference will be given to:

  • Students attending HBCU, HSI, or HMSI
  • Students in the southern and midwestern parts of the United States
  • Students from marginalized communities
