ICTP Physics Without Frontiers (PWF) Programme 2024 for Physics and Mathematics Students

Call for Applications is now open for the ICTP’s Physics Without Frontiers Programme 2024. ICTP is inviting eligible physics and mathematics students in the Global South for its PWF Programme. For over five decades, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) has been propelling global endeavors to advance scientific expertise in developing nations.

ICTP Physics Without Frontiers (PWF) Programme

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) was founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, it has pioneered scientific exploration, fostering international cooperation through the pursuit of fundamental questions at the highest level.

ICTP Physics Without Frontiers Programme – Details

The PWF Programme is an initiative orchestrated by volunteer scientists, to cater to a country’s specific needs. From hands-on training to impactful lectures, the projects incorporate science diplomacy, industry interaction, and diversity initiatives.

The ICTP Physics Without Frontiers (PWF),  fosters collaboration and mentoring in environments where opportunities might be scarce. PWF has impacted the lives of more than 10,000 students from over 50 different countries of the world.

Benefits

  • Physics Without Frontiers seeks to empower university students in physics and mathematics through cutting-edge research, inquiry-based learning, and hands-on sessions.
  • PWF Volunteers, experts in their respective fields, aim to instill transferable skills in computing, programming, and data science.
  • In addition to individual development, the program identifies and mentors top students, paving the way for further studies abroad, including the prestigious ICTP diploma program and MSc/PhD placements.
  • PWF offers support to physics and mathematics departments in universities with limited research infrastructure. The program offers faculty training, university courses, curriculum support, and outreach efforts to enhance public understanding of science.

Eligibility Requirement

  • Applications that are broadly interpreted, seek to instruct, prepare, and motivate physics and mathematics undergraduate and graduate students from the Global South are encouraged to apply to PWF.
  • The project’s inspiration and ideas often come from or are developed in collaboration with, scientists and institutions in the Global South.
  • The proposers, who may be scientists or students, are not required to have prior experience planning events. The proposal will be submitted by a single individual who will serve as the primary point of contact for the PWF team.
  • Every in-person project should have a designated local organizer, who need not be the one to submit the proposal as long as they are explicitly consulted, supportive of the idea, and included in it.

Application Process

The application process is in two stages;

  • The first stage focuses on the motivation, goals, and initial ideas of the project. The PWF selection committee, guided by specific criteria, shortlists proposals based on their potential impact and alignment with program objectives.
  • In the second stage, successful candidates refine their proposals, presenting a comprehensive plan including timetables, speaker/tutor lists, and detailed budget estimates.
  • Proposals that are accepted by the selection committee, will have their project team notified and a budget will be allocated. The project team is expected to keep working with the PWF team for the delivery of the PWF project.
