The ongoing application process marks the third consecutive year of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellent Scientific Communication.
These prestigious awards aim to honor outstanding science communicators, journalists, and research scientists who have created innovative and original work to effectively convey scientific, engineering, or medical developments to the general public.
Eric & Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications
The ultimate goal is to foster a diverse community of science communicators, science journalists, and research scientists. Individuals who have produced high-quality communications and have demonstrated the potential or skill to communicate various scientific, engineering, or medical topics are encouraged to submit their work.
The winners of this year’s awards will receive support as they continue to make complex scientific, engineering, and health-related issues more understandable to the public, thereby enabling society to address challenges and maximize opportunities in areas like climate change, future pandemics, human genome editing, and artificial intelligence.
Benefits
- Each subcategory will have one prestigious award valued at $40,000, along with two recognition awards worth $20,000 each. A grand total of $640,000 will be granted.
- The Awards for Excellence in Science Communications go beyond merely providing financial rewards. Along with the prize money, Schmidt Sciences is dedicated to nurturing a dynamic and growing community of science communication awardees. This will be achieved by collaborating with esteemed journalistic institutions to offer continuous training and professional development opportunities.
Eligibility criteria
- This opportunity is open to individuals who have actively engaged in science communication, science journalism, or research in 2023.
- Applicants should be able to clearly express their motivation for creating work that enhances public interest, appreciation, or understanding of science, engineering, or medicine, as well as the impact these fields have on society.
- It is essential to have a genuine passion for science communication or journalism and be able to share the journey that led to the current position and future aspirations.
- Applicants should have at least one exceptional example of science communication or journalism that showcases their potential or ability to effectively communicate various aspects of science, engineering, or medicine, including issues, beauty, societal benefits, complexities, shortcomings, or controversies.
- Applicants should be able to present a compelling case for what winning this award would mean to them personally and professionally.

- Entries must be submitted through the online submission form in the category that most closely fits the submitter’s background by 11:59 p.m. ET, March 31, 2024. Works and applications translated into English are welcome.
- Individuals are allowed to submit only a single application for the program.
- There is no submission fee.
