Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) Global Academy 2024-2025 (Up to $5,000 Award)

The MESA Global Academy, a collaborative effort of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA), is an interdisciplinary initiative to foster research collaborations and knowledge production among academics focused on the MENA region.

The MESA Global Academy offers competitive scholarships to scholars who have been displaced, with a primary focus on those based in North America.

This initiative is a collaboration between MESA, the City University of New York, and other university partners. Generous support for the project comes from organizations such as the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation,  the Persian Heritage Foundation, and the Carnegie Corporation.

Program Details

The MESA Global Academy offers assistance to scholars who are researching topics related to accountability, the rule of law, governance, as well as fairness and economic equality. It provides support for scholars engaged in these areas of study.

The Global Academy encourages scholars from a diverse range of fields, including but not limited to comparative literature, history, Islamic studies, political science, anthropology, and economics, to apply for its fellowship program.

Global Academy scholars also participate in various research workshops hosted by partner universities in their respective areas of focus. They present their research at one workshop and act as a discussant at another. Moreover, they attend at least five professional development workshops and are sponsored to participate in at least one MESA Annual Meeting. The fellowship includes a $5,000 award to cover travel and research expenses.

 Areas of Focus

  • Governance, Accountability, and the Rule of Law: This particular research cluster focuses on exploring opportunities for enhancing the rule of law and implementing governance reforms in the MENA region after the Arab uprisings. It encompasses various topics including judicial independence, the design of anti-corruption measures, decentralization and increased participation, equity and inclusiveness in public service delivery, impartial law enforcement, and promoting transparency and accountability within the administrative state.
  • Fairness and Economic Equality: This research cluster aims to address the growing demands for socio-economic justice in a region characterized. By significant socio-economic inequality, a large youth population, and high unemployment rates. Topics covered within this cluster include socio-economic demands in the region and the rising levels of inequality. Constitutional protection for socio-economic rights, access to preventive healthcare services, inter-generational poverty, labor markets, education and social mobility, youth employment, and food and water security. Environmental sustainable social development, improving access to basic services. Trends in public expenditure for infrastructure investments, and exploring the link between sustainable development goals and social justice.

Eligibility Criteria

The Academy offers fellowships to scholars specializing in Middle East Studies from the MENA region. Particularly those who are currently displaced in North America. To qualify for the fellowships, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Hold a PhD or an equivalent degree in a field within the social sciences or humanities (graduate students will not be considered).
  • Have had their primary institutional affiliation in the MENA region before displacement.
  • Have a publication record that demonstrates scholarly productivity. English, French, a native MENA language, or the principal research language of their field.
