Launched in October 2020, Explore is hosted by RECOFTC in collaboration with CIFOR-ICRAF and supported by the Swedish Government. As the first research network in the world devoted only to forest landscape governance, it uses a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to solve the urgent problems Southeast Asian communities face.

The mission of Explore lies a commitment to sustainable development, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change. By promoting gender equality, social inclusion, and transboundary collaboration, Explore endeavours to create lasting impacts in forest landscapes across Southeast Asia.

RECOFTC Explore Scholarships Opportunities

  • Explore scholarships for young women PhD students is generously funded by Explore, offering up to USD 40,000 in research funding over three years to doctoral candidates researching forest landscape governance.
  • Beyond financial support, recipients benefit from scientific co-supervision, internship opportunities, and capacity development programs.

Eligibility Requirements

  • RECOFTC accepts applications from any scientific field with an interest in forest landscape governance;
  • Candidates have to be dedicated to participative, transboundary, interdisciplinary action research that incorporates human rights and gender inclusion.

Applicants who meet the following requirements must be accepted into the programme:

  • They must be female PhD students who are under 32 years old.
  • Possess citizenship from Timor-Leste, Lao PDR, Burma, or Cambodia
  • Enroll in a university in Southeast Asia
  • Respect Explore’s agreement and its reporting guidelines.

 Procedure for selection

  • To ensure fairness and objectivity, Explore uses a double-blind scientific process for scholarship selection.
  • Applications are screened by the Secretariat to ensure their eligibility, and then a grant panel conducts interviews and reviews.
  • Final choices are made by the Explore Programme Advisory Committee (PAC).

Selection Criteria

  • Applicant profile: Education Background, research experience, motivation and recommendations.
  • Research plan quality: Candidate’s Assessment based on innovativeness, technical feasibility, gender equality integration, potential impact and capacity-development strategies.
  • Proficient English skills for communication purposes are mandatory for all Applicants
