The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), is currently accepting applications for the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award 2024. The award demonstrates the indomitable spirit of women and nonbinary individuals in the field. Anja Niedringhaus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer, left an enduring legacy, inspiring the creation of this award with a generous donation from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), is dedicated to meeting the holistic needs of women and nonbinary journalists. Through awards, fellowships, grants, safety training, and emergency aid, the IWMF stands as a steadfast supporter of equal opportunity and press freedom worldwide.

Prize:

Recipients of the Courage in Photojournalism Award not only receive a prestigious acknowledgment but also a substantial cash prize of $20,000. Their impactful work gets the spotlight during an award ceremony, offering a platform for broader recognition.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The award is open to full-time women, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming photojournalists of any nationality.
  • Both freelance journalists and those affiliated with media organizations are eligible to find a common ground to showcase their dedication to journalism.
  • All entrants should be full-time women, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming photojournalists of any nationality.
  • Prospective candidates must be working as a journalist full-time, and journalism must be their primary profession.
  • The IWMF will only accept applications and third-party nominations in English until the specified deadline below.

Application – How to Apply

  • A candidate/nomination statement, work samples consisting of a set of twelve (12) photographs, and candidate information are required for each nomination and application.
  • An editor, mentor, or fellow journalist may nominate a candidate, or the candidate may nominate themselves. You have two options if you are nominating someone else: use Google Forms to complete an abridged nomination form or submit a full application that includes a statement and work samples.
  • After nominations, the IWMF will contact successful applicants to let them know they have been nominated for the award if they complete the Google Form with their details. It should be noted that completing the Google Form does not serve as a substitute for or constitute a complete application in Picter, which is required in order for the jury to review it.
