Submissions are ongoing for the Victor K. McElheny Award 2024 acknowledges exceptional reporting on science, public health, technology, or environmental matters at the community or regional level. Recipients will be granted a $10,000 prize and recognized at an event organized by the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT.
This prestigious award is made available thanks to the kind contributions of Victor K. McElheny, Ruth McElheny, and the Rita Allen Foundation.
Prizes for Victor K. McElheny Award 2024
- Every year, the Victor K. McElheny Award celebrates a singular submission, whether it is a series of articles or an individual piece, by presenting a $10,000 cash prize.
Eligibility Criteria
- The award accepts submissions from freelance or employed journalists working for independent news organizations. Media outlets are also permitted to submit entries on behalf of journalists.
- Because the award focuses on recognizing small and regional markets in the United States, media outlets must be U.S.-based.
- Media outlets with a large staff and a primary focus on a national audience do not qualify for consideration.
- The award seeks local or regional journalism from the previous calendar year that features substantial reporting on topics related to science, public health, technology, or the environment. Submissions can be single pieces or a series of up to three works on a related subject. Entrants may consist of broadcast, print, or digital journalism. Audio and video entries should not exceed 60 minutes in total.
Judging Criteria
- A panel of well-respected science journalists will evaluate the submissions. The judging criteria will prioritize investigative journalism, community-oriented service, and captivating storytelling that pushes boundaries and has a meaningful impact. As Victor McElheny puts it, the award aims to showcase journalism that contributes to public understanding of the advancements in technology and science, and their implications for humanity.
Submission Procedure
To participate, entrants must fill out a submission form and upload their work in the designated file formats or share a permanent URL. The submission period will commence on December 1, 2023, and conclude on January 31, 2024.
