Through the Essay Competition, students are encouraged to delve into a diverse array of thought-provoking and intriguing topics that go beyond the scope of standard academic curricula.

Participating in the competition provides an opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge, sharpen their argumentative skills, and receive feedback from experts in the field.

All entries in our essay contest are evaluated by a distinguished panel of senior academics from renowned institutions like Oxford and Princeton, overseen by the Chairman of Examiners, esteemed former Cambridge philosopher Dr. Jamie Whyte.

The judges will select the top essay in each of seven subject categories – Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology, and Law – and designate the recipient of the Grand Prize for the most outstanding entry across all subjects.

In addition, a special prize is awarded for the best essay submitted in the junior category, catering to participants under the age of 15.

  • All candidates selected for consideration, including prize recipients, will have the opportunity to obtain electronic certificates recognizing their accomplishments. Winners of First, Second, or Third Prize who attend the London ceremony will receive a signed certificate.
  • A scholarship valued at US $2000 towards attending any John Locke Institute program awaits each winner in every subject category and the Junior category. The winning essays will also be featured on the Institute’s website. Prize distribution events will occur in London, offering winners and runners-up the chance to interact with judges and other faculty members from the John Locke Institute. Family, friends, and teachers are encouraged to attend.
  • The top essayist overall will be granted an honorary Junior Fellowship at the John Locke Institute, coupled with a US $10,000 scholarship to participate in one or more of their summer schools and visiting scholars programs.
