The main goal of the Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge (TIEC) is to promote student-driven clean energy innovations, increase awareness, and foster investments within Nigerian universities and colleges.

Launched in 2023 through a collaboration between NEF and sponsorship from All On, an impact investment firm, the TIEC2024 initiative will showcase impactful energy innovations developed by student teams from tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Selected teams will have the opportunity to present their ideas in-person or through a hybrid format at the 9th Nigeria Energy Forum held at Marcellina Centre, Along Radisson Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Nigeria. Winning teams stand a chance to receive a portion of over 3 million Naira in funding.

Challenge Theme

The 2024 key themes are:

  • Powering Agribusiness
  • Energizing Healthcare
  • Local Manufacturing
  • Cleaner Production


  • Winning teams will receive a portion of 3.5 million Naira in grant funds to pilot or scale up their project prototype.
  • First prize is 1.5 million Naira
  • Second prize is 1.1 million Naira

Third prize is 0.9 million Naira.

  • Each shortlisted team must send at least two student representatives, including one female and one male, accompanied by a faculty staff member.
  • They will receive complimentary registration, hotel accommodation, and travel/logistics support to actively participate in NEF2024 technical sessions, training, networking activities, capacity-building sessions, and the Live Pitch Finals scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Lagos.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Teams must consist of undergraduate or master’s students enrolled in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, such as universities, polytechnics, technical colleges, and other degree-awarding institutions.
  • Collaborative teams can be formed across different departments or faculties within an institution to promote teamwork and creativity.
  • Each team must have a faculty or institutional staff member as a mentor. Additionally, student chapters of professional organizations like IEEE, NiMechE, and NSE are welcome to participate.
  • It is highly recommended to maintain gender balance and equity within team compositions at all project stages, from idea generation to project completion.
  • Past winners of TIEC are encouraged to become ambassadors, supporting and mentoring new teams in their region rather than resubmitting previous entries.

Application Process

  • Phase 1: Share a concise Pitch Deck (with up to 7 slides) detailing your idea, problem statement, potential for innovation, and anticipated impact.
  • Phase 2: Selected entries will present a Poster showcasing the concept, technical design, delivery strategy, and cost-benefit analysis at NEF2023 on Day 1.
  • Phase 3: Finalists are requested to submit a 90-second video pitch summarizing their innovative concept.
