Applications are currently open for the National Science-Health-Environment Reporting Fellowships 2024, a joint initiative by the Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ), the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ).
This fellowship is designed to support early-career journalists interested in or pursuing careers in science, health, or environmental reporting.
Over a year, selected fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Participate in workshops and events at the annual Environmental Journalism (April 3-7, 2024), Health Journalism (June 7-10, 2024), and ScienceWriters (early November 2024) conferences.
- Engage in customized seminars and workshops to enhance skills, connections, and resources for science, health, and environmental reporting.
- Be matched with a professional mentor.
- Receive prepaid memberships in the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), SEJ, and AHCJ.
- Join peer-to-peer networking platforms.
- If an independent journalist, receive project support stipends.

The fellowship provides:
- Support for conference attendance, food, lodging, and travel within the United States for events associated with AHCJ, SEJ, and CASW/NASW.
- Virtual events for skill-building, updates on stories, and networking.
- Two years’ membership in AHCJ, SEJ, and NASW.
- Registration for virtual events held during the program year by AHCJ, SEJ, or CASW.
- Mentoring opportunities with a senior journalist in a chosen topic area.

Eligibility
- Early-career, U.S.-based working journalists (staff or freelance) with at least two years of professional experience.
- Fellows are expected to attend training events during the program year, with the format (in-person or virtual) determined based on public health considerations.
- Each employer or regular client of freelancers is required to provide a letter of recommendation supporting the applicant’s participation in the fellowship.
Application Requirements
Your application should include:
- A cover letter introducing yourself, detailing your journalism background, and career development efforts, and explaining why you seek the fellowship.
- Current resume or CV.
- Letter of recommendation from your current employer or regular client addressing the benefits of the fellowship and pledging support for your full participation.
- Two sample news or feature stories published or aired during the past 12 months.
