Fans eagerly anticipating the next film from the renowned Bong Joon-ho will have to be a bit more patient, but there’s now substantial information available about his highly awaited project, “Mickey 17 (2024).” Bong Joon-ho, a filmmaker celebrated for his exceptional work, has particularly captivated audiences with his forays into science fiction, a genre where he has notably made his mark globally.

While not confined to science fiction, Bong Joon-ho’s contributions to the genre have been significant and widely acclaimed. His cult-favorite monster movie, “The Host,” is often hailed as one of the finest modern monster movies, skillfully blending genuine terror with large-scale spectacle. “Snowpiercer,” his first predominantly English-language film, stands out as a superb adaptation of a graphic novel.

It impressively melds action with incisive social commentary, earning widespread acclaim. His more recent film, “Okja,” continues this trend, offering a dark twist on the classic ‘child and their mythical creature’ trope with a narrative about a young girl and her beloved super pig, again interwoven with meaningful social commentary.

With “Mickey 17,” Bong Joon-ho returns to his roots in science fiction, much to the delight of long-time fans. His distinctive approach to the genre, which often involves a critical look at social issues, has established him as a pivotal figure in international cinema.

Release Date and Where to Stream the Movie

Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming film “Mickey 17” is set to make its official debut in theaters on Friday, March 29, 2024. It has already been confirmed that “Mickey 17” will be exclusively available through theatrical release initially. This means that audiences eager to experience the film will need to visit their local movie theaters to watch it.

This decision aligns with the trend set by the phenomenal box office success of Bong Joon-ho’s previous film “Parasite,” which notably exceeded expectations and highlighted the appeal of experiencing his storytelling on the big screen.

As of now, there are no announced plans for a streaming release of Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17.” While Bong Joon-ho has previously collaborated with Netflix for the release of “Okja,” it seems more probable that “Mickey 17” will eventually find its way to Max, given that it is a Warner Bros. production. Warner Bros. typically aligns its streaming releases with its own platforms, making Max a likely candidate for the film’s eventual digital distribution.

Cast and Characters

Robert Pattinson, fresh from his role as the Caped Crusader in “The Batman,” continues to work with renowned directors, taking on the lead in “Mickey 17.” In this film, Pattinson portrays the 17th clone of Mickey, an expendable human used for menial and risky tasks. This role promises to showcase his versatility and depth as an actor.

Joining Pattinson in this space adventure is a remarkable supporting cast. Steven Yeun, known for his performance in “Minari,” Naomi Ackie from “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” Toni Collette of “Hereditary” fame, and Mark Ruffalo, a staple of “The Avengers” franchise, are all confirmed to appear in the film. This ensemble of talented actors adds to the anticipation for “Mickey 17,” hinting at a dynamic and compelling cinematic experience.

Makers and Creators of the Movie

Bong Joon-ho makes a much-anticipated return to directing with “Mickey 17,” his first film since the Academy Award-winning “Parasite” in 2019. Fans of the acclaimed director are eagerly awaiting this new project, especially following the massive success of “Parasite.” Bong Joon-ho isn’t just directing; he’s also writing and producing the film, ensuring his distinct vision is reflected throughout.

The film boasts an impressive crew, with “Squid Game” composer Jung Jae-il and “Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” cinematographer Darius Khondji on board. The editing is handled by Jinmo Yang, known for his work on “Life is Beautiful,” while Fiona Crombie, the production designer of “The Favourite,” and Catherine George, the costume designer for “Snowpiercer,” add to the film’s creative team.

“Mickey 17” is produced by Bong Joon-ho, Dooho Choi, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner, with Marianne Jenkins as the executive producer. Dan Glass, known for “The Matrix Reloaded,” serves as the VFX Supervisor, promising a high level of visual effects expertise. This collaboration of talented professionals suggests “Mickey 17” will be a film of significant artistic and technical merit.

What Is the Movie About

While specific plot details for Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” remain scarce, it is known that the film will be at least a loose adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7.” The reason behind the change in the title from “Mickey7” to “Mickey 17” is not yet clear. This alteration could indicate that the film might serve as a sequel to the novel, or perhaps take a different narrative direction than a direct adaptation.

Official Synopsis

As we await more information closer to the film’s release, here’s a look at the synopsis of Ashton’s original novel, “Mickey7,” which serves as the source material for the film:

“Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein. Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life in Niflheim is getting worse.

The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity makes Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7. That is if he can just keep from dying for good.”

Will Mickey 17 Be Getting a Sequel

While it’s premature to speculate on whether “Mickey 17” will spark a new franchise for Warner Bros, it’s noteworthy that Edward Ashton, the author of the source novel “Mickey7,” has already published a sequel titled “Antimatter Blues” in 2023. This suggests that there is potential for further cinematic exploration in this universe, should “Mickey 17” prove successful.

However, it’s important to consider that Bong Joon-ho, the director of “Mickey 17,” is not typically known for creating sequels to his films. His filmmaking career has been marked by a diverse range of standalone projects. Regardless, the existence of a sequel to the novel provides an interesting possibility for extending the story beyond “Mickey 17,” depending on the film’s reception and the creative direction Warner Bros chooses to take.
