Applications are currently ongoing for the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award 2024. In 2014, following the passing of Michael Jacobs, the Gabo Foundation and the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias collaborated. To establish the Michael Jacobs Scholarship for travel chronicles.

This year, in honour of the 10th anniversary of the English writer’s death, a new edition of the scholarship is being launched. It is funded by the Michael Jacobs Foundation for Travel Writing. A non-profit organization established by Michael’s widow and brother to honour his legacy. And fostering the growth of travel writing in Spain and Latin America.

Benefit

  • The scholarship offers a monetary incentive of $10,000 to support the research and writing of the selected applicant’s article or book. This amount includes any necessary taxes to be paid by the recipient and the organizing institutions.
  • The scholarship will be awarded in two installments: $5,000 upon announcement of the winner, and the remaining $5,000 upon completion of the project and submission to the publisher for publication.
  • In addition to the financial reward, the winner will also have the opportunity to serve as a jury member for the following edition of the Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Journalists or writers from any country are eligible to apply for the scholarship, as long as their work focuses on travel journalism in Latin America or Spain, and is written in Spanish or English.
  • Applicants are required to submit an autobiography of up to 800 words (in Spanish or English), describing their experience as a travel journalist and their motivation for applying for the scholarship. Traditional resumes will not be considered.
  • A comprehensive project presentation (either an article or book) is also required, which should include a project description. Work schedule, and planned travel itinerary. The project must be written in Spanish or English. The project doesn’t need to be completed, as the scholarship aims to support an ongoing project. However, applicants must submit at least a portion of their work, allowing the jury to evaluate their narrative skills.
  • Applicants must have at least one published article or book in a printed or digital medium at the time of application submission.
