The Józef Tischner Fellowships welcome applicants from various academic disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. While it is not mandatory, having a thematic connection to one of the Institute’s research fields is highly encouraged. Successful candidates for the Józef Tischner Junior Fellowships will have the opportunity to conduct their research projects at the IWM for a four-month period between September 2024 and June 2025.

Benefits

  • Postdoctoral applicants, who have completed their PhD before the fellowship application deadline, will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 3,000. Candidates who are currently pursuing their doctoral degree will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 2,500. This stipend is intended to cover expenses such as accommodation, living costs, travel, health insurance, and any other incidental expenses related to their stay in Vienna.
  • Additionally, the IWM offers Visiting Fellows access to office space with internet connectivity, as well as research and administrative facilities, all provided free of charge. Visiting Fellows will also have the opportunity to engage with the scholarly community at the Institute and participate in its activities. In general, fellowships begin on the first day of the month and end on the last day of the month.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates for the Józef Tischner Junior Visiting Fellowships must meet the following criteria:

  • Must hold Polish citizenship, be Polish-American scholars, or have a permanent residence in Poland.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences, or have obtained a PhD in these fields within the last four years.

How to Apply Józef Tischner Fellowships

as Józef Tischner Fellowships cannot consider applications sent via email.

  • The application materials required include:
  • A brief letter of motivation should discuss how the project would benefit from being at the IWM, its connection to the IWM’s mission and research, as well as specific research and writing goals during the fellowship.
  • Concise project description (maximum 550 characters).
  • Project proposal (maximum 7,500 characters including spaces) that outlines the project’s objectives, the current state of the field, the proposed methods, and a work plan.
  • Two letters of recommendation from scholars who are familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
  • Include a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) in your application.
  • Ensure that your CV includes a list of your publications.
  • Remember that all application materials must be in English.
