Applications are currently open for the IJP German-Northern European Journalists’ Bursary 2024, offering an exciting opportunity for journalists from Germany and the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
This initiative provides up to eleven German and eleven Nordic/Baltic journalists the chance to work with media outlets in the respective other country, fostering cross-cultural understanding and professional development.
Objectives of the Program
Journalists selected for the German-Northern European Scholarship gain invaluable personal experience and professional insight into the political landscape, economy, and everyday life of their host country.
The program encourages participants to connect with opinion leaders and decision-makers in Germany, the largest country in the European Union.
Funding
The program is supported by the Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Office of the German Federal Government), foreign ministries of the Nordic countries, and a select group of private sponsors. Each scholar will receive a single payment of 3,800 Euros to cover a portion of travel expenses, accommodation, and personal costs during their stay in Germany.
Program Timeline
- Three-day introduction conference in Tallinn (March 26 – 28, 2025)
- Journalists begin their stay at their respective host organizations
- Final meeting in Berlin (May 21 – 23, 2025)
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to journalists from Nordic or Baltic countries aged 18 to 45
- Employed or freelance journalists in print, radio, or TV media
- Some knowledge of German is preferred, but fluent German is not expected; workable knowledge of English is essential
Application Requirements

- CV, including a photograph
- Letter of recommendation from an editor supporting the application
- Four written samples of work (TV and radio journalists should provide a comprehensive list of contributions)
- Preferences for host media outlets and host regions (e.g., Munich) in Germany
