Funded Hawaii Pacific Foundation Doctoral Research Award (Up to $20,000 Available) 

The Hawaii Pacific Foundation (HPF) Doctoral Research Award at the East-West Center offers up to $20,000 to support Native Hawaiians’ educational access or exceptional doctoral students who are conducting high-quality research that is relevant to the Native Hawaiian community.

The award funds will cover your tuition and/or institution fees, books, living expenses, equipment, travel supplies, software, and other research-related expenses. The award duration is up to six months, with a strong recommendation for residency at the East-West Center.

The East-West Center facilitates connections between awardees and its network of scholars, aiding in research writing and dissemination. Awardees, even if studying at universities outside the University of Hawai‘i, are encouraged to be in Hawai‘i or resident at the EWC in Honolulu for their research. They are also urged to share their findings with the EWC and the community.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, you:

  • Must be in the research stage of a doctoral program at an accredited university.
  • Your research must contribute to Native Hawaiian community issues.

Application Requirements 

If you are eligible and wish to apply, you must apply by 11:59 PM (Hawaii Standard Time) on May 15 2024. In addition, you also need to upload the following documents together with your application.

Submit your application by 11:59 PM (Hawaii Standard Time) on May 15 with these documents:

  • Curriculum vitae or resume
  • Official transcripts from each higher education institution attended (unofficial for UH students)
  • Two academic letters of reference, one from the applicant’s graduate advisor
  • Detailed budget
  • Thesis or Dissertation Research Prospectus that includes the following:
    • Title
    • Abstract
    • Research questions
    • Theoretical or conceptual framework
    • Research design and methodology overview
    • Positionality statement focusing on connections to the Native Hawaiian community
