Applications are now being accepted for LAWA Fellowship Program 2024. The fellowship was established in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., to train African women human rights attorneys who are dedicated to going back to their home countries and working to improve the status of women and girls there for the duration of their careers.
Since the inception of the LAWA Program, it has witnessed the attendance of over 80 advocates for women’s human rights from Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. In the future, they hope to welcome Fellows from other nations.
LAWA Fellowship Program Details
The LAWA Program officially begins when the Fellows enroll in the Georgetown Law Center’s Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course in July.
Fellows are expected to return home to continue their advocacy for women’s rights in their home countries after completing the program
Meanwhile, the LAWA Fellowship Program runs roughly 14 months from July of the first year to August of the following year.
Benefits of Georgetown Law LAWA Fellowship Program
In addition to professional development training, the LAWA Fellowship covers the $5,000 cost of the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course and the $66,650 cost of the LL.M. degree at the Georgetown University Law Center.
Upon acceptance into the LAWA Program, candidates must be able to provide proof to the U.S. Embassy that they have the funds available (roughly $28,000) to obtain a visa.
They must also be prepared to pay for any additional expenses (such as travel, housing, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, books, etc.).
Eligibility Requirements for Georgetown Law LAWA Fellowship Program
To be considered eligible for the LAWA Fellowship Program;
- Applicants must be women’s human rights lawyers from Africa and hold an LL.B. or other law degree.
- It is preferred that applicants Live and work in Africa, and are yet to obtain a Master’s degree.
- Though individuals with less or more experience will be taken into consideration, the strongest applicants are often those who have been out of law school for five to 10 years.
- Applicants who are straight applying from an LL.B. program or another legal school and have no prior work experience will not be taken into consideration.
- Applications from both men and women who are devoted to women’s rights are highly encouraged.
- All applicants must promise to return to their home countries after completing the Fellowship and to employ their best professional efforts to advance women’s human rights throughout their careers to be eligible to participate in the LAWA Program.
- Candidates must possess strong English language skills, both written and oral.
- Proficiency in using computers for drafting papers and conducting research is required of candidates. Therefore, Candidates are encouraged to learn basic computer skills before arrival.
How to Apply
- Applications for the Georgetown LAWA Fellowship Program 2024 must be completed on a computer set. Any handwritten applications will not be accepted.
- All reference letters and the application itself must be submitted in English, per the requirements for applicants. Your ability to follow the application’s requirements will be taken into account when determining your eligibility for the LAWA program.
