We are currently accepting applications for the 2024 British Academy International Fellowships. This program aims to support exceptional early career researchers in taking their initial steps towards establishing an independent research career by gaining valuable experience on an international scale.
Successful applicants are expected to focus on specific and dedicated research, ensuring the undertaking of high-quality, original work. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the British Academy and the Royal Society.
The primary objective of the International Fellowships Program is to attract and retain promising talent in the United Kingdom, fostering a globally connected and mobile research and innovation workforce.

- Attract talented early career researchers from around the world to establish and conduct their research in the UK.
- Support early career researchers in pursuing high-quality and innovative research endeavours.
- Provide opportunities for the acquisition and transfer of new skills and knowledge through training and career development.
- Cultivate long-term relationships through networking opportunities and participation in the International Fellowships alumni program.
Benefits
- The International Fellowships provide support for two years, with the award offered at 80% Full Economic Cost (FEC). Applicants can request research expenses of up to £12,000 and relocation costs of up to £8,000, with the necessity to justify the requested amounts in their applications.
- Additionally, applicants may be eligible for Alumni funding after completing their Fellowship tenure to support networking activities with researchers based in the UK or internationally.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a PhD or be in the final stages of their PhD, with completion (including viva) before the Fellowship’s start date. Confirmation of the PhD award is required before confirming the Fellowship award.
- Have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application, excluding career breaks but including teaching experience and/or industry time.
- Currently work outside the UK.
- Not hold UK citizenship.
- Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English.
- Have a clearly defined and mutually beneficial research proposal agreed upon with a UK host researcher.
