Applications are open for the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Climate Diplomacy Academy 2024. Established in 2016 with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, the KAS Regional Programme Energy Security and Climate Change in Sub-Saharan Africa actively coordinates activities in the region.

Its mission is to enhance the political and social framework for climate-friendly sustainable development, fostering stronger regional and international cooperation on energy, security, and climate action within Sub-Saharan African countries.

In the face of global challenges such as climate change, sustainable resource utilization, and climate-related risks, the program recognizes the pivotal role of multilateralism and international diplomacy in finding effective solutions.

In collaboration with Strathmore University, the Regional Programme will host the 4th Climate Diplomacy Academy (CDA2024) from April to June 2024. The Academy comprises a series of online tutorials designed to:

  1. Strengthen participants’ understanding of climate change and its related impacts.
  2. Enhance awareness of climate diplomacy as a key mechanism for fostering more responsive climate action at local, regional, and global levels.
  3. Promote understanding of the challenges faced by diplomats and negotiators in building momentum and actions toward realizing the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Program highlights

A pivotal component of the Academy is a three-day physical conference scheduled for the end of June 2024 at Strathmore University, Nairobi.

KAS will cover all costs associated with participation in this conference for selected participants.

Eligibility criteria

  • Age not exceeding 35 years.
  • Minimum status of a 3rd-year undergraduate student in fields such as International Studies, Environmental Science, Political Science, Development Studies, or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrated interest in current international climate change discussions and negotiations.
  • Ability to dedicate approximately 5 hours per week to assignments between April and June 2024.
  • Availability to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, during the week of 17th June 2024.

  • Short essay (1-2 pages) on the topic: “How can international cooperation strengthen the fight against climate change and its impacts in Africa?”
