Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering five grants worth 4,500 Euros each to media outlets in Nepal. These grants aim to support the creation of new media programs focused on natural resource management and green growth. The primary objective is to enhance the capacity of Nepalese media to provide innovative and solution-oriented information on these topics to both the public and policymakers.

EJN Seed Grants For Media Outlets to Cover Natural Resource Management & Green Growth in Nepal

The grants are specifically intended to kickstart the development of new programs, columns, or sections that center around green growth and natural resource management. During the grant period, it is expected that the chosen media outlets will design and test a new program, producing a minimum of two stories or episodes as a proof of concept.

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is interested in media programming ideas that focus on the following topics:

  • Examining the repercussions of inadequate governance and ineffective budget allocation on natural resources, while identifying corrupt practices that hinder green growth in the country.
  • Investigating the impacts of hydropower projects on riverine ecosystems, freshwater biodiversity, and the effects of infrastructure development on mountain ecosystems, among other related issues.
  • Exploring government strategies, policies, and potential scalable solutions that aim to improve the management of Nepal’s natural resources.
  • Highlighting the initiatives of Indigenous and local communities that contribute to green growth and enhance climate resilience.

Benefits

  • Five organizations will be provided with grants of 4,500 euros each.
  • The chosen media outlets will receive support from a senior journalist and/or a subject-matter expert to enhance their capacity during the period of the grant.

Eligibility Requirement

  • Nepal’s media landscape is calling on a diverse range of media entities, including newspapers, online media outlets, multimedia channels, radio, television, and social media platforms, to submit their applications. The applications should propose a new media programming idea related to the designated themes and include the production of at least two episodes or stories. Multiple ideas in a single application will not be accepted.
  • Only applications in English and Nepali will be considered for this funding opportunity. Unfortunately, applications in other languages cannot be accommodated at this time. Applicants must have a working understanding of English or Nepali or have access to a translator for communication with Internews staff. However, the produced stories can be in any language.
  • Applicants must be transparent about their use of generative AI tools, if any, in the development of their proposals. EJN reserves the right to disqualify applicants who have engaged in unethical or improper professional conduct, including plagiarism and presenting AI-generated content as their own.

Judging Criteria

The panel of judges, consisting of Internews staff and environmental journalism experts, carefully review and discuss all received applications. The overall quality of the proposal. Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • The relevance of the proposed project about the objectives and priorities of the grant program.
  • The potential impact of the project, including the quality and effectiveness of the project design.
  • The innovative nature of the proposed activities.
  • The financial viability and cost-effectiveness of the project.
  • The ability of the applicant to successfully execute the proposed project.
